Even the Monarch Butterflies Vacation in Pismo Beach!

From late October through February, thousands of Monarch butterflies cluster in the limbs of our Eucalyptus trees and Monterey Pines, giving the appearance of leaves. The butterflies form dense clusters on the trees, sheltering the group from rain and providing warmth. The weight of the clusters helps prevent the wind from dislodging the butterflies. They travel over the Sierra Mountains and west of the Rockies to get to the beach. Some come as far as Canada to escape the colder temperatures of the North to enjoy our temperate climate.

Pismo Beach accommodates California’s #1 Monarch Butterfly Grove. During butterfly season, knowledgeable docents are available for tours or simply wander through the beautiful beach side grove to observe the beauty of nature. The grove is located on Highway 1, on the southern border of Pismo Beach. Admission and parking are FREE. Tour buses are encouraged to park north of the trees, inside the North Beach Campground.
